The First Assignment

“Show me my old castle when it was in its prime, before we became stranded here,” King Vratt said in a steady voice. “I want to collect my technologies gathered from other places and bring them here where we can study them and put them to use.”

Dyami stood in front of the gazing glass with King Vratt by her side. Their reflections faded, replaced by a castle identical to the one they were standing in, except the landscape and surroundings were far different. That castle was on an inhospitable moon with a putrid atmosphere that smelled like rotten eggs. It was a perfect hiding place for the Naga after their rampages.

Dyami moved her finger in a clockwise direction on the gazing glass. The images shifted, passing through walls and floors.

“This mirror is pretty amazing technology,” King Vratt said.

Dyami did not lift her eyes from her work. “Yes, the mirror is amazing. And remember that only I can access its power. What would you like to see?”

“Take us to the deepest levels of the castle.” He guided her to where to travel, using the gazing glass, down darkened hallways with lit torches in the distance. The king’s storage was at the far end of a long, dark hallway. It held all the technologies he had collected over the years.

“We need to arrive moments after you left here to steal the Black Cube.” She did not convey how she knew those details. “No one will suspect you’re from another time.”

Spreading out her fingers, they viewed the locked room. “We will depart from an identical space in this castle; you call it your lab. I will create a portal connecting the two spaces, then I’ll hold it open, so you can transfer items.”

The details fascinated King Vratt. His mind raced. “Can we also empty my gold stores from there? It’s close to the storeroom.”

Dyami was insistent. “No. We can’t go anywhere else besides this one place. The longer we stay in that time, the greater the possibility others will discover us, and we will create a fissure.”

“What is that?” He was disappointed that he couldn’t gather all his riches.

“An anomaly that affects all other events afterwards. It shifts the future. For example, if you removed the gold from the other castle, there would be none to pay your mercenary armies. They would suspect you had taken it and hidden it from them. They would take their own ships and hunt you down and kill you before you had the cube in your possession. As a result, you would cease to exist in either time.”

“OK, we’ll only clean out the storeroom.” He would have liked to remove all the treasure, but he also wanted to live. “I think the technologies will suffice.”

Dyami rubbed her chin, working through the details. “Everyone involved needs to dress exactly like did the day you left your other castle.”

“What about you? You weren’t there.”

“I’ve thought about it.” Dyami was repulsed by the words coming out of her mouth.
